A browser extension that subtitles the video playing in your tab
The OpenSubs extension puts subtitles over whatever is playing in the tab, generated as it plays. It is free, and it is in the Chrome Web Store, on Firefox Add-ons and in Edge Add-ons.
Free. Open source. Chrome, Edge and Firefox.
What the extension is
OpenSubs is a subtitle generator. The page at opensubs.app needs nothing installed and works on a video you drop onto it. The extension is installed, and in return it does something a page cannot: it subtitles a video that is already playing in a tab.
Subtitles over what is playing
Subtitles over whatever is playing in the tab, generated as it plays.
The same engine
The web app, the extension, the desktop app and the command line are all built on the same Rust engine.
Free
The extension is free in all three stores.
Open source
AGPL-3.0. The engine, the web app, the extension, the desktop app and the command line are one repository on GitHub.
Where to install it, and what you need
You need Chrome, Edge or Firefox. The extension is installed from that browser’s own store:
- Chrome: OpenSubs in the Chrome Web Store
- Firefox: OpenSubs on Firefox Add-ons
- Edge: OpenSubs in Edge Add-ons
How to use it
Add the extension from your browser’s store, then play a video in a tab. The subtitles are generated as the video plays and are put over it.
The extension, or the page?
They answer different needs, and neither replaces the other.
A video already playing in a tab
Use the extension. It is the one that puts subtitles over whatever is playing, as it plays.
A video file you have
Use the page, with nothing installed. Drop the video onto it to transcribe, translate, style and burn subtitles into it, or export them as .srt, .vtt or .ass.
Long files and batches
The desktop app for macOS, Windows and Linux is the one for long files and batches.
Cost and privacy
The extension is free.
Its source is public under the AGPL-3.0, in the same repository as the rest of OpenSubs, so you can read what runs on your machine rather than take this page’s word for it. Questions, or a problem to report: email hello@opensubs.app.
